We're excited to open our National Award-winning Irchester Field School Learning Programme to home-educated learners on Friday 20th June 2025

 

Your day:

  • Explore a live excavation alongside experienced archaeologists from the University of Leicester.
  • Learn from passionate staff and volunteers at The Chester House Estate (CHE) and the University of Leicester School of Archaeology and Ancient History.
  • Uncover the secrets of the Roman town through a fun and educational program.

Teaching level:

The activities will be taught at a level appropriate for children working at UKS2 (years 5 and 6). Whilst we welcome children outside of this range, you may need to provide differentiation support if you bring children working above/below this level.

 

Timings:

  • Please aim to arrive by 9:30. All activities will start promptly at 10:00. If you are late you may have to wait to join your group until activity two.
  • The programme will finish by 14:15
  • You will receive an itinerary of your activities at least 1 week before your visit.

 

Ticket Options:

  • Standard Ticket: Admission for one adult and one child.
  • Additional Adult/Child tickets must only be purchased in addition to standard tickets.
  • All children attending must have a ticket and be supervised by an adult at all times.
  • As the activities take place on a live site, this event is not suitable for children (including babies) under the age of 7.

 

What to bring:

  • Suitable outdoor clothing for the forecasted weather (this event will run regardless of the weather)
  • A Pencil
  • Outdoor shoes (no heels, open-toe sandals or flip flops)
  • Packed lunch/water bottles

Capacity:

This event has a limited capacity, however, subject to demand, additional dates may become available.

Back by popular demand is our cade lamb feeding experience, which will be delivered this year by a trusted expert animal welfare team. Up to 100 lambs will be housed in our dedicated lamb barn, where visitors can meet, bottle feed and learn from the experts about caring for lambs and the farm-to-fork story. 

Activities:

By joining us, you will:

  • Feed a cade lamb
  • Participate in our changes in farming, story-focused workshop
  • Complete a simple easter themed craft activity
  • Have free time to explore the site through both a self-led colour hunt and a sensory landscape trail

The activities will be taught at a level appropriate for children working at EYFS/Year 1 (aged 3 - 6). Whilst we welcome children outside of this range, you may need to provide differentiation support if you bring children working above/below this level.

  • The programme will finish by 14:15

Tickets:

  • All children/adults must have a ticket to enter the lamb barn
  • Our 'Home Educated Child ticket' includes a free non-feeding adult ticket
  • Adults who want to feed a lamb should purchase an 'Additional participating child/adult' ticket
  • Addittional adults who do not wish to feed a lamb should book a free 'Non-feeding additional adult' ticket

Important Saftey Information:

We are working in partnership with public health and environmental health to ensure our visitors' and animals' welfare. This partnership is producing health and safety guidance and videos which will be distributed to ticket holders closer to the event. We strongly advise that you familiarise yourself with the guidance and get in touch with us.

All visitors to the lamb barn must bring an addittional pair of shoes that you will change into for the duration of your visit to the lamb barn (preferably Wellington boots or similar waterproof footwear).

We strongly advise that anyone who thinks they may be pregnant and babies under 6 months old do not enter the lamb barn at any time. More information as to the risks can be found here: https://www.farmattractions.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Mead-HS-leaflet.pdf

Following advice from Northamptonshire Public Heath and Environmental Health teams, buggies will not be allowed into the lamb barn at any point. We can accommodate wheelchairs.
