Roman Leather Bag Making
Have a go at making your own Roman Style leather bag and learn all about ancient leatherworking techniques.
Handbags were used in Roman times but few contemporary items and little information has survived to show us how leather or cloth items were constructed. Based on the Saccus, the Roman style leather bag or pouch, make your own featuring the same authentic front tie fastening, made with a choice of colourful and contrasting leather for a contemporary feel.
You will be dying your leather in a colour of your choosing, punching holes and stitching it all together to create your bag. Participants will be using sharp tools (scissors, awl, hammer and hole punches, needle, strap cutter, pliers) and chemical leather dyes. Suitable for complete beginners, and older children with adult supervision as some manual dexterity is required using tools. All materials and tools required will be supplied for use on the day.
