Roman Bone Working Workshop
Join us for an introduction to Roman bone working and take away your own handmade Roman Bone Needle!
Learn all about the parts and species of animal bone used (plus ivory, horn and antler) to manufacture certain types of Roman artefacts, take time to admire some of the incredible worked bone artefacts that have been discovered around Northamptonshire and are now stored in our ARC. Followed by an immersive practical bone working session using replica Roman tools and the equivalent modern hand-tools, following the stages of manufacturing from heavy sawing, drilling, filing and decorating. You will have chance to work on all these skills and try your hand at your choice of object from Hair Pins, to Pendants and Bone Combs as well as your Bone Needle. All material you work on you can take home to finish and keep.
Suitable for complete beginners, and older children with adult supervision as some manual dexterity is required using sharp tools. All materials and tools required will be supplied for use on the day.
